Conn Symphony Grand 8B (Very Rare \"Gustat\" Edition - Collectible ): $1050.00
Notice the first slide trigger and the position of the third slide finger ring. The 8B Symphony Grand was built between 1932 and 1940. I think this one was built in 1937 according to the serial number (#317792). It had a #1 1/2 bore (0.458\") , although the first valve slide is a 0.480\" bore, a feature it shares with the (post war) 2B New World Symphony and 28B Connstellation. It also measures 0.458 on my calipers. Here is what Conn said in 1937 about this trumpet: \"The Symphony Grand 8B is newly designed for discriminating players in large symphonies and bands where big, powerful tone, scale of unusual flexibility, and just the right amount of resistance are paramount. It has a one piece bell made of specially processed metal called C-17, an innovation bore taper and othe features found on no other trumpet. Used by Joseph Gustat, first chair, St. Louis Symphony: Phil Napoleon, featured artist at NBC, NewYork: Herman Faberman, for over 10 years with Horlick\'s A. and P. Gypsies, and also with Maxwell House Show Boat; Wm. Tong, radio celebrity and for six years first chair with Sousa; Charles Spivak, first trumpet with Ray Noble.\" The C-17 alloy used on the 8B sings like no other. When you flick the bell rim with your finger the bell rings with a sound higher in pitch and longer in duration than any other CONN before or since. Also, the association with Joseph Gustat makes it special in a similar way that the 38B is by Maynard Furgeson and Cat Anderson, except that Gustat was involved in its design. This trumpet has been refurbished in silver plate with new valve alignment, springs, felts and corks. It also has the Clickless Crysteel valves. Upon initial inspection I thought the second valve slide had a patch and was impressed with the uniform and beautiful workmanship. However, I have been told by a fellow er that has two 8Bs that this feature is original with the horn and serves as a guard. The lead pipe has been replaced with the correct taper and is clean. The inside of the main tuning slide has a slight dent where the slide must have been stuck and removed in the past. It is hard to see in the photos. This very rare trumpet plays beautifully and looks like new with very sharp engraving and new silver plate. According to Reynold Schilke\'s study of plating vs. lacquer the plating is thinner than lacquer and is closer to the raw brass sound. If that is accurate the C-17 alloy should sing more beautifully than ever on this Gustat Conn 8B. NOTE: The second valve slide guard has been confirmed as an original feature of the instrument when it was made. It is NOT a patch. NOTE: I can not ship to all international locations. Please contact me before offerding to see if I can ship to your location.
