Confederate Naval Cutlass from Civil War Period With Original Scabbard For Sale

For sale is this wonderful original and authentic Confederate States Naval cutlass. Probably crafted in the Richmond Va. area this weapon has all the attributes you want to find in a Confederate manufactured weapon. The casting flaws in the brass , the slight waviness to the blade , the untouched peened pommel are all items to check. The repros have a solid cast handle --the originals such as this one have a hollow cast handle . When you hold a repro the weight is in the handle--this authentic one has the weight in the blade when you hold it because of the hollow cast handle. The sand used to make the mold for the repros is much finer than the coarse sand used in the originals. Once you have held a real one like this and a repro you will learn the difference in heft. These were well crafted weapons and are not to be confused with the cheapness of repros. The overall length is 25 1/2 \" and the blade is 21 \" . The original scabbard is 21 \" and is an extreme rarity to find with an original cutlass. Although the throat is missing--to have even a fragment of an original scabbard is almost unheard of. The casting flaws in the brass of the hanger hook are very obvious. The scabbard tip has very nice incised lines and is ad it should be. The blade is an almost perfect fit but the scabbard has shrunk just slightly over the years. In fact the blade had not been removed in so long from the scabbard when I got it I had to very slowly and carefully work it back out so as not to damage the valuable relic. One of the best out there and will pass even the mosr demanding exam by the experts. A great weapon and one you will be proud to add to your collection. The flag is not included !!
