Unique Cavalry sword very desireable maker-Friedrich Poter--his ornate swords of which about 4 are known with this extra fancy guard ,extra chasting ,silvered scabbard and a maiden pommel of which no others are known, fine detailing throughout, extra engraving US marked blade nice unsharpened edge mint point, scabbard retains much original silver, fine tight guard with fancy 3 strand wire execution around the shagreen or sharks skin grips that to are in mint condition--These fine swords were imported early in the war an the ones surviving were all known prominent union officers.This is a collectors grade sword to be proud of-the swords guard is probably one of the prettiest guards in the entire war and its condition being a cavalry sword is indeed scarce. Even has the felt on the blade side of the guard. During the war Germany supplied more than 2/3\'s of the edged weapons if a confederate died of wounds from a sword it was most likely a german made sword- this long 35inch blade of cavalry length is quite desireable. the scabbard has no dings or pushes, in fact the entire sword is in top condition.
