"The Pride of the Yankees" Extraordinary Memorabilia Display with Ruth Letter, Cooper Document & More!

Just a year after Lou Gehrig's death, The Pride of the Yankees celebrated his life with true Hollywood grandeur. Samuel Goldwyn produced the film, Sam Wood directed it, Gary Cooper was nominated for Best Actor, and Walter Brennan had a memorable part as Gehrig's sportswriter-confidant. Babe Ruth and Bill Dickey played themselves, while Babe Herman served as a technical advisor to Cooper, whose baseball abilities were woefully inept. Babe Ruth and Gary Cooper shared three scenes in The Pride of the Yankees, one of which has stood the cinematic and historic test of time: Cooper tearfully delivering Lou Gehrig's famous "Luckiest Man" speech as Ruth reverently gazes on. For Babe, the film was a second opportunity to perhaps make amends, or seek redemption, for his fraught relationship with Gehrig during their playing careers. First, he had showed solidarity by attending the real-life Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day, held at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939, and by famously embracing his enfeebled former teammate in an unrestrained bear hug. Now, in the silver screen's 1942 reprise, he had once more humbly relinquished the spotlight to Gehrig—Cooper's Gehrig, that is. Both instances saw Ruth (in the baseball parlance of pop psychology) "go to bat" and "step up to the plate" for his one-time adversary in poignant displays of compassion and good will.

Presented here is a one-of-a-kind memorabilia display which pays homage to the making of the film and features extraordinarily rare and desirable mementos relating to the film’s production and the career of the Bambino. Featured first is an intriguing one-page, signed, typewritten letter sent by Ruth shortly after filming of The Pride of the Yankees. Drafted June 2nd, 1942, the letter is drafted on Samuel Goldwyn Inc Ltd Hollywood letterhead but is noted “New York” by Ruth in the upper right corner. Responding to a fan letter that he received which apparently inquired about Ruth’s famous “Called Shot,” Ruth responds by surprisingly dodging the subject, writing in part, “There were so many questions in the letters and references to “certain home-runs” and other incidents of by-gone days, that I wish I could answer each person separately. Mighty sorry I’m not the letter writing type of fellow so I hope you will accept this short note of thanks. I enjoyed working in the motion picture “The Pride of the Yankees” and hope you will enjoy seeing the picture sometime in July.” At the conclusion the letter features a handsome black fountain pen signature, “Babe Ruth,” direct from the Bambino’s hand.

Following up Ruth’s letter is a one-page letter of acknowledgement sent by Samuel Goldwyn Co. to Gary Cooper, August 16, 1934, in which the company instructs Cooper that they will be having him play the role of John Barrett in the film project titled “Broken Soil” (which was later re-named “The Wedding Night”). Agreeing to the role, Cooper has signed in black ink opposite of Goldwyn’s Vice President, thus making the document official.

The last document presented within the display is an official Samuel Inc. Ltd. Confirmation of Employment Card for actress Sarah Padden, who played the role of “Mrs. Roberts” in Pride of the Yankees. Dated March 9, 1942, the document outlines Padden’s payment schedule and is signed by the actress at the conclusion. Capping off the relics within this display is a 2009 official Babe Ruth dual relic 3" x 5" card, issued by Breygent Marketing. The card features .75" x .25" sections of a Babe Ruth game used bat and a piece of a Yankee Stadium brick. The card stands in NM-MT condition and features authentication documentation from PSA/DNA on the reverse side. All four items are beautifully housed in a custom box framed display along with two commemorative figurines of Ruth and an original Lobby Card from “The Pride of the Yankees” featuring Ruth and Cooper during their on-screen performance. Any one of the pieces of memorabilia in this tremendous display would stand out on their own. And combined, they make one of the nicest presentation pieces ever made available to the public.
