ANTIQUE \"KOBE DOLL\" JAPANESE WOODEN MECHANICAL DOLL / TOY - C. 1890-1900 For Sale

Thisis an antique wooden mechanical Japanese doll or toy called a \"Kobe Doll\" which stands 5 inches high, measures 3 3/4 inches x 2 3/4 inches at the base and it dates to around the late 1890\'s - early 1900\'s. \"Kobe Doll\"is the name given to mechanical wooden dolls or toys and they were originally named after the opening of the Kobe port in Japan in 1868.They were made as high-class expensive souvenirs sold to the luxury ships that visited the Kobe port and their funny movements and facial expressionsmade them very popular. This \"Kobe Doll\" is in the form of a man with a chopping board cutting up a fish. When the knob at the side is turned the head bobs from left to right and the arm, knife and fish also move up and down and from side to side. This \"Kobe Doll\" has great character from the inlaid eyes and painted red protruding tongue of the man down to the markings on the fish. The condition is very good - there are no chips, cracks, splits, damage or repairs to be found and all moveable parts are in good working order. For accuracy in my description I will point out the underside of the arm holding down the fish is rough in placeswhich can only be seen when the arm is raised. There is no damage to arm whatsoever and this does not detract way. This antique Japanese wooden mechanical \"Kobe Doll\" or toy would make an ideal gift or a great addition to any collection.
