Click to View Image Album Up for sale is this fine signed Meilink home safe. Fabulous diminutive size: 14 inches tall by 9.5 inches wide and 10 inches deep. The safe has four interior compartments, one with a drawer.
Outside is in all original paint, and is fine condition with expected light surface wear. The lock has been oiled and is in excellent working condition. The door, which was balanced by a locksmith when the lock was serviced, opens and closes easily. I don\'t have the key for the interior drawer.
Small safes, like the antique fans that I sell, are now highly collectable - the smaller the better. This is the smallest size that I have ever had, and I have had only four or five of these over the past 20 years.
COMPANY HISTORY: Charles Meilink was a Toledo inventor known, in the late 1800s, for his Dauntless bicycle. History remembers him mostly, however, for an invention that rose from the ashes of his bicycle business.In 1896, an explosion burned the Dauntless manufacturing plant to the ground. In the wake of the fire, Mr. Meilink proved himself dauntless by launching an invention workshop in Toledo.
Ironically, the fire that destroyed his bicycle business sparked an idea that disrupted an entirely unrelated industry — safes. Reflecting on the total loss of Dauntless, Mr. Meilink saw the need for a safe that could withstand both theft and fire.
Fire resistant safes of the day were formed from cast metal, making them expensive and difficult to move. In 1903, Mr. Meilink patented a new safe construction that included inner and outer housings formed from relatively lightweight sheet metal. A filler material was placed between the housings to increase heat resistance.
Over the next several decades, Mr. Meilink developed several inventions relating to safe construction and testing that disrupted the industry. By the mid 1900s, Meilink safes were known around the world. They were even considered standard equipment for U.S. Post Offices.
The basic Meilink construction is, to this day, considered “the modern fireproof safe“, distinguished from the cast metal construction that it displaced. The Meilink brand lives on as a “Heritage Brand” of Fire King Security Group, which acquired Meilink Industries in 1990. At the time of that transaction, Meilink annual sales were reported to be $20M.
