Antique Johnson & Clark / Gold Medal Improved Home Shuttle Sewing Machine 1874:
$226.50

For sale: (1) Improved Home Shuttle Sewing Machine by Gold Medal Sewing Machine Co.
This machine was manufactured by the Gold Medal Sewing Machine Company, Orange, Massachusetts which was established in 1860 by Johnson, Clark & Co.
The company introduced it\'s Home Shuttle machine in 1870 which was subsequently redesigned and improved. This particular machine looks to be an early version of the improved home shuttle (we think) because most versions have the name embossed on the machine and this one does not.
We believe it to date between 1872-1877. That\'s about as close as we can narrow it down and if anyone can help improve that date please contact us!
We removed the sewing machine from it\'s wood box for the photo\'s and you can see it in the box in the last photo.
This machine we have for sale is also the most ornate of any we have seen online and in archives. We haven\'t seen another image quite like the center image in any other Gold Medal Co sewing machines. It seems to us that it\'s fairly unique.
Additionally, the rear slide plate (pictured) lists several patent dates with the top one and featured date being for the original home shuttle patented July 28, 1868. We have read some Improved Home Shuttles have a serial number engraved on the front slide plate. We could only find one number on this machine and it\'s pictured. It looks like the number is 94442.
This machine hasn\'t been restored. All we did was wipe it down gently and clean a few areas where we wouldn\'t risk doing any damage. I\'m sure it can look much better if properly restored, but that\'s a job for the new owner.
The shuttle and bobbin are there and there is still some old thread clinging inside.
The only missing parts we can identify is the needle and perhaps a handle for cranking the wheel, but we don\'t see where the handle would have been attached. Nothing looks like it\'s missing there so that is a bit of a mystery to us.
Thank you for your interest in the machine. Please send an email if you have any questions or comments.
