Antique Alligator Leather Doctor Medical Bag For Sale

This is an antique alligator leather doctor medical bag.

It was patented in 1884, so it probably dates shortly thereafter.

It measures approximately 19 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches deep (48.2 cm x 21.6 cm). It measures approximately 7 inches tall, and including the handle approximately 10 1/2 inches tall (17.8 cm, 26.7 cm).

As you can see in the photos, there is wear to the piece. The leather that was attached to the steel strapping going across the top has mostly fallen off. I do have a few loose pieces of that. The alligator is in fairly good condition. There are water stains going across the middle on both sides, with one side more so than the other. There is wear to it at both sides at the creases and some light scattered scuff marks. The leather covering the thin piping at three of the four corners has partially worn off.

The leather handle is in pretty good condition, with some light scuff marks and wear to it. The brass hardware, including the latches, handle ends and lock are all in very good condition, with just tarnishing, and they all work well.

The inside is lined with a soft light brown leather, but it has some staining and dirt marks to it. 

It is missing its original key.

The two top furthest pieces of hardware are each marked PAT. AUG. 19. 84
