Antique 9\" Military BOWIE KNIFE Sheath Lt. Colonel insignia JOSEPH RODGERS Sons For Sale

PLEASE NOTE: Closest determination to actual manufacturing date is from circa. 1837 to 1901. This is when the Joseph Rodgers & Sons cutlers included in there stampings \"CUTLERS TO HER MAJESTY\" . As I am slowly selling off my 30 years of collecting, this knife has been part of my collction for nearly 30 years, one of my first purchased. It is in the same condition as found, having periodic polishing and leather conditioning done over the years. I purchased this from a family selling of there Grandfathersposessions who were unaware of the added Lt. Colonels Oak Leafs on handle guard. Also purchased were Civil War artifacts. I say this because I am not certain if the addition of the oak leaf insignia in this manner was a common practice of military men or not. As I wondered why each leaf was different in color, metal. I can only hypothesize that the rank ofLt. Colonel had 5 different pay grades. Colors and leaf style were used as a determination which grade the soldier was in. How they are attached I do not know, I assume some adhesive. Strong adhesives were used in Jewelry making during this time period. There is a clear coating of something over the leafs and on to the brass of the guard. They were this way when purchased. Did someone at a later date do this for extra insurance not to loose them ? I was going to remove some of it from the brass guard, then deciding not too, leaving well enough alone.

Knife and Sheath is in a most rarely found excellent condition, please read above for specific detailed conditions. Two military Lt. Colonels oak leaf insigniahave been added on brass guard, to be exposed and viewed on knife when worn and holstered.
