1939 General Electric, GE, HM-171 Table Top 5” Prewar TV, Unrestored.:
$9999.95

1939 General Electric, GE Model HM-171 table top 5” TV. This prewar television was designed and sold as a “picture-only” set and a companion radio would provide sound. Many 171’s were modified to include sound in the same cabinet, this is one of them and it was nicely done.

Cosmetics of both cabinet and chassis are very good overall, unrestored cabinet has original finish and is still very attractive. It has an extra hole/control/knob at the far left for audio.

Looking at the chassis, you can see the original transformer was replaced, a speaker, audio amp and control were added along with a large 2,500 volt capacitor I removed from the top/rear. The 6F8G tubes were replaced with 6SN7G’s and leads removed for the tops of the old tubes. Looks like these were very early post-war mods, only two tiny holes were drilled to attach the large capacitor to the top of the chassis, two more small holes for the larger transformer and holes were enlarged for the wires to pass through on the chassis under the transformer. A lot/most of the original caps and resistors remain and all of the original coils. It even has the original tuner shield/cover that so many of these sets are missing. The picture tube housing was replaced with one from a later oscilloscope for some reason, I cleaned it up and placed some thick weather-stripping in the front to hold the picture tube nicely in place. I made/installed a simple picture tube mask, the original no doubt rotted and is long gone. I also replaced the broken glass with a piece of clear Acrylic for now an saved the old glass that is easily replaced with new one cut to size. I also added a new, nicely reproduced back, the original was missing but the AC cord & plug was still there. The 5BP4 picture electrical socket has become detached.

I left the audio mods in place since I have no plans to electronically restore it and it might be the only one left that still has them. Obviously the set can be restored back to picture-only if desired.

Comes as shown with all tubes including 5BP4 picture tube. All tubes including the picture tube are untested, picture tube still holds it vacuum and displays well. The important thing is the chassis is all there with no known missing electronic parts. I am selling this television as pictured, as-is, display only, not working, for parts and repair, no returns.

Please be sure to view all the pictures below. If you are seriously interested in buying, please write and ask questions about anything you are uncertain of.
