An authentic Rawlings VM1 leather football helmet. With chinstrap fully affixed - very rare for helmet of this age to have a chinstrap wth it and in this condition.

The piece was acquired in excellent, but game used condition with only minor impact on top consistent with game play. There was no history or internal markings with it.

The exterior is excellent for a helmet dating to the late 1930s and early 1940s. The interior clearly shows the Rawlings logo and size that matches the back stamp on the exterior. The inside is flaking but very secure for a helmet of this era, and the helmet is movable and operates properly. Obviously this is for display purposes only for the serious collector.

The exterior restoration I have done has it match the helmet worn by Green Bay Packers and NFL Hall of Fame legend, Don Hutson, in the 1943 team photo. Hutson and several other players are wearing this style \"turtle\" or \"one hump camel\" Rawlings VM1 helmet.

This helmet also closely replicates the authenticated Rawlings VM1 helmet that was traced back to Charley Brock, another famous Green Bay Packers player and teammate of Hutson. That helmet with provenance sold for over $8,300 in 2013. A google search for \"Brock Packers Helmet\" images will give you an idea of how closely this authentic Rawlings VM1 helmet matches the Packers prior to them moving to the \"two humped camel\" version late that year and into 1944 NFL Championship season.

Many hours of restoration were put into making this helmet display as a \"Holy Grail\" addition to your collection.

With that in mind, I have valued it in accordance with past helmets I have sold with this rarity and at a proper fraction of what the authenticated Brock helmet was purchased for from Heritage sales.

Finding a VM1 in good condition is rare. One with a fully functioning original chinstrap is ever rarer. Restored to replicate a helmet worn by one of only six players in Green Bay Packers history to have their number retired, Don Hutson #14, makes it a truly one of a kind collectors piece.
