For sale is amazing piece of Baseball History. This is one of the first World Series Trophies ever given to players. Prior to this, the players were given typically rings or pins. There were only 30 players and coaches on the team, and only a few have ever come to market.
Exceedingly rare silver-plated trophy cup presented to Patrick Donohue in commemoration of the Philadelphia Athletics' 1910 World Championship. Each player on the Championship Athletics team received one of these trophies. This is not only one of the earliest World Series trophies in existence, but one of the most beautifully designed as well. The front side of the three-handled cup displays the gold-plated Philadelphia city crest and is engraved "Presented By/The Citizens of Philadelphia/To/Patrick W. Donohue/World's Champions/The American Base Ball Club/of Philadelphia/Season/1910." Another side of the cup features a crossed bat-and-ball motif in raised relief, while the third displays an enameled blue pennant picturing a white elephant and the letter "A." As noted on the underside, the trophy was manufactured by J. E. Caldwell & Co. of Philadelphia and is stamped "Silver Plate." (Also of special note: J. E. Caldwell & Co. is the same company that produced the Philadelphia A's World Series press pins and other jewelry award pieces for the team during this era.) Despite the fact that these Championship trophies were issued to each team member in 1910, they are incredibly rare today.Mr. Donohue was the back-up Catcher on the team.
Please Note that this trophy is in ORIGINAL CONDITION. It has NOT been altered in any way, just normal silver maintenance. All of the other examples that have come up have been cleaned or re-plated.I did not want to ruin the history of it. There are spots on the trophy that the silver plating have worn off, mostly on the handles, which is normalfor an item over 100 years old. If you would like to clean it, that is your prerogative. There are a few small scratches in the trophy, and 1 very small dent by the rim, which is amazing for its age. I have spoken to an antique restoration company that specializes in these types of items. They said that they can re-plate it and it would look like it was brand new, but to me, that would take away some of the history. It is absolutely amazing just the way it is in my opinion. Don't miss out on this opportunity to own history.
I have included high resolution pictures of all angles, so please judge for yourself. It is truly a piece of baseball history.
