Working Antique 1904 Longines Marine Chronometer with Gimbal mounts and 3-Tier Wood Chronometer Box

Up for offerding in this no-reserve sale is an antique1904 Longines Marine Ship Chronometerwith original Gimbal mount hardware and 3-tier protective wooden box, all working and in good to fair cosmetic condition, as appropriate for a used 112 year-oldtimekeeping machine.

The clock is running strongly and keeps good time. From a full wind-up, this chronometer kept time to within 0.5 seconds of atomic clock time in a 24 hour timing test run. The timing test was repeated on 3 different days, and the average daily error was also at 0.5 seconds per day ( 1/2 second of time drift per day ). However, the continued operation or accuracy of this century-old clock is not guaranteed.

The mainspring power reserve ( i.e. the continuous run-time after a full wind-up ) was measured as being 30.3 hours of continuous run-time.

The clock casing and chromed finish gimbal hardware are in very good condition. There are a few shallow indentations to the underlying bezel ring base-metal. The chrome finish is in excellent condition overall. ( See photos ).

The chrome watch case is 3 inches in diameter, not including the winding stem.

The glasscrystal is very clear and smooth, with no apparent scratches, scuffs or other defects.

The dial is only in Fair condition with several areas of scattered patina (small gray spots on the dial) and some very distinct darkening and patina in bottom region of the dial (see photos)

The hands are in good condition, but they do show some small, hard-to-see, spots of darkening and oxidation. ( Refer to photos of hands and dial. )

The 3-tier protective wooden chronometer box and chromed gimbal mount hardware are in excellent cosmetic condition ( see photos ) and are in perfect working condition. The box gimbals, latches and hinges each work smoothly and properly. The chronometer box is 5-1/8 x 5-1/8 x 5-1/8 inches.

The movement appears to be clean. The small orange-brown colored patches seen in the photo of the movement (i.e. near the snail cam micro regulator) are actually a chrome-mirror reflection of my fingers while I was holding the camera, and do not represent areas of tarnishing or rust.

The movement has the following engraved inscriptions:

"Safety Pinion"

"21 Jewels"

"Adjusted in 5 Positions"

"Longines Express Monarch" ( ... this is the type of Longines movement)

"Guinand Bros, Ashland, Wis." ( ... Guinand Co. was a private label American distributor and watch manufacturer 1865 - present.

The Guinand company was bought by the world renowned watchmaker Helmut Sinn in 1995 )

"1611610" ( ... this is the Longines movement serial number 1611610, which dates this watch to the year 1904 )

I believe I have made a fair and accurate description of this item in its current condition. However there is no warranty of any kind, and this old item is being sold in "As-Is" condition.
