Rare Sinew Sewn Leather Covered, Tacked, Hand Forged Iron War Axe18.5 inches H 7.5 inches W at head. Head is 1.8 inches W at neck & 3.5 inches at it\'s edgeThis axe is circa 1890-1920 & a true fur trade axe. Appears to be Sioux, although may be a variation of a non-pierced Missouri War Axe.
Almost all axes that you see on are replicas and not hand forged or are pow-wow or later reservation items-which is fine, but that has an artistic value & not historic.
This axe is from the Many Bears Collection, which had been started @ 35 years ago. This piece was collected @ 15 years ago.
The tacks have steel in them, which is correct for trade axes or war axes of that period ( 1880-1930\'s). Steel tacks have been used since 1874Excellent condition, authenticated, from an estate of a professional collector.
