Notes: \"The firm of J.E. Bleckmann was founded in Solingen in 1808.It was in business until 1880, after which it became J.E. Bleckmann andCompanie.
As states in John Walther\'s book on Solingen makers of the late Victorian era,J.E. Bleckmann was, \'One of the well established cutlery firms in the Solingenarea, the company had specialized in the production of tools and edged weaponssince its foundation in 1808.\'
Apparently they did not produce a large number of swords, as their productstend to be fairly scarce. Walter agreeswith this observationin that he states the firm did not attain the production volume of other swordand cutlery firms in Solingen. On the other hand, he further notes that theyhad a representative in an office in England after 1858 and this does seem toindicate an aggressive business seeking to expand.
A number of German sword manufacturers had London offices or London agents. TheVictorian age of Empire in England provided a major outlet for Solingenproducts. The British army, large and far flung around the globe, was inconstant need of Solingen cold steel. London was a convenient place to dobusiness once the American Civil War broken out, both for Solingen and Americanfirms. Business could be transacted in London directly, instead of traveling toPrussia for Solingen products. It was easily accessible from the United States, and the business language was English, a decided advantage for Americans.
The only Bleckmann-marked swords observed to date, both in private and publiccollections, have been model 1860 cavalry sabers. No model 1840 heavy cavalrysabers of model 1840 artillery sabers have been observed. The enlisted samplesstudied have all had the same blade and scabbard dimensions, while there aretwo different grip profiles. Most examples studied were heavily worn, showingconsiderable field use. Only two officers\' sabers have been found, both inidentical configurations....
Finding a Bleckmann cavalry saber is fairly difficult since they never werevery plentiful. Even though sword and Civil War collectors have not focused onimports for many years, the increasing popularity of Civil War collectibles hasmade finding a Bleckmann save in fine condition extremely difficult. Thepreponderance of these sabers appear to have been used very hard, lendingfurther credence tothe conclusion that they were early war imports. Formerly, the common wisdom,on these sabers was that they could not have been early war imports, as theGermans were not making model 1860 sabers and most certainly not in the earlywar years. This is not true....
For a small producer of sabers without any U.S. government contracts theBleckmann sabers are well made and superior to many of their contemporaries. They are also interesting in that they come in two different grip styles. Thegrip on the dated 1861 saber is like the contemporary Ames grip, while thesecond style grip, which is rarely seen, is more like a Roby grip. On the Amesstyle, the grooves encircle the grip from the guard to the pommel cap with onlyone groove fully under the forward edge of the pommel cap. On the other type, the grooves continueto the top of thegrip near the Ames type grip when Ames provided a model and placed the initialorder for 5,000 sabers.
We do not know, but can surmise based on evidence in hand, they they are bothfrom the groups totalling 10,000 contracted by Ames and delivered to theOrdnance Department in 1861 and 1862. The Bleckmann sabers are fairly scarce, with the classic model of 1860 profile where the grip wrap stops at the pommelcap being the more commonly seen type.
