Collectors\' Reference Books
National Geographic Magazine, November 1983 (Vol. 164, No. 5)
Dr. George Ross Starr, Jr. held, without a doubt, the finest private collection of wild fowl decoys anywhere in America. His 1,000+ floating sculptures (son, Gary, says 2,000+) line the floor-to-ceiling shelves in his indoor pool area where, on pages 650-51 of the November 1983 edition of National Geographic magazine, Dr. Starr can be seen \'tending his amazing flock.\' The in-depth article, Humble Masterpieces: Decoys, (pg. 639-663) written by George Reiger with photographs by Kenneth Garrett, also features interviews with master carvers R. Madison Mitchell of Havre de Grace, MD and Lem Ward of Crisfield, MD.

DECOYS OF THE ATLANTIC FLYWAY

by George Ross Starr, Jr., M.D.

Who better to write about the exciting world of American \'floating sculpture,\' the truly original folk art, born of necessity but rescued for the aesthetically pleasing attributes of the lure, purely wrought in the imagination of the maker. Dr. Starr\'s massive collection of more than two thousand decoys of every species and made by the very best carvers from every American flyway, is a testament to his desire to \'have them all!\' His depth of knowledge of carvers and carvings was unequaled, and he fully shares that knowledge in his 308-page, fully indexed work published in 1974 by Winchester Press in New York. Photography by George Dow: 161 black and white illustrations and dozens of color plates. Book in very good condition, dust jacket \'tattered consistent with use and age\' (torn, taped-see photo).

After his death in 1985, Dr. Starr\'s extraordinary decoy collection sold at sale in May 1986, see Bourne Co. catalogue (below).
